Wondering what to do with the kids during the winter months? There are plenty of kid-friendly activities in Frederick County, even when it's cold outside! Just because the temperature dips down doesn't mean it's time to hibernate!

Want to step back in history on an educational journey? Visit Monocacy National Battlefield and learn how the 1864 Civil War battle affected local civilians like six-year-old Glen Worthington. The museum in the upper level of the visitor center features an electric map program and exhibits, many of which are hands-on. Entry to the park is free and visitors ages 5-14 can complete a Junior Ranger booklet about the battle to earn a badge.

Located in the railroad town of Brunswick is the Brunswick Heritage Museum. There kids can enjoy an interactive HO scale model railroad depicting the B&O passenger line from Union Station in Washington, D.C., to the freight yards in Brunswick. The multi-level museum also features exhibits on Victorian costumes, toys, and baseball, as well as the Brunswick C&O Canal Visitor Center.

Speaking of model trains, Frederick’s Roads and Rails Museum is packed with fun for the young and young at heart. The museum has one of the world's largest model railroads with miniature villages, mountains, trains, and automobiles. Kids are sure to love the circus, roller coaster, zoo, and erupting volcano! The layout is a three-dimensional work of art packed with sound and movement. It brings out the kid in everyone!

Want to see Maryland’s first on-the-farm dairy processing plant firsthand? South Mountain Creamery is a working dairy farm that operates 365 days a year. Visitors to the farm can see why Frederick County’s agricultural roots run deep. Watch the cows being milked daily from 1:30-5:00 p.m. or bottle-feed the calves at 4:00 p.m. Every visit that ends with a scoop of super-premium ice cream from the farm store is a good one!

Adventure Park USA is a wild west-themed family entertainment center located just off of Interstate 70 near New Market. Open year-round, Adventure Park USA offers indoor attractions like more than 100 arcade games, a rock-climbing wall, and a multi-level soft playground for young children.  West World Laser Tag takes participants back in time to 1876, where they must restore peace to a town controlled by a rowdy gang. This town is sure to keep you and your friends coming back to face the Wild West again and again.

Frederick's premier skating facility, Skate Frederick Ice Sports & More, features two National Hockey League regulation rinks. The facility offers a snack bar, a Pro Shop for all your skating needs, video games, and skate rentals. Seating for spectators and ample parking is available. Skate Frederick is open year-round with daily public sessions for your skating enjoyment. The facility also hosts a wide range of recreational and competitive ice hockey and figure skating programs.
