    Overview

Winter is when the training wheels come off for hikers, climbers, and backcountry skiers. Cold temperatures can quickly lead to hypothermia or frostbite if you’re immobilized or lying on the cold ground, the wind poses a much greater danger if you’re in an exposed location, and water is harder to find because it’s likely frozen.

In this 3-session Winter Survival series, we'll travel the woods and fields of Fox Haven, stopping as we go to practice different skills. Learn the essential techniques for fire building, navigation without a compass and shelter-building in the winter season that could prepare you for an unexpected situation in nature.

TEACHER: Taylor Roman Schulman grew up around Lake Linganore, exploring the surrounding woods and fields. His formative experiences there fostered in him a lifelong passion for plants and ecology. He has worked throughout Maryland as a farmer, environmental educator, and landscaper. Taylor is a teacher, orchard steward, beekeeper, and caretaker at Fox Haven. When he is not working he can be found analyzing the plant species composition of the meadow by his house, or observing bees going in and out of hives.
