Experience Winter Traditions in
Frederick County during Museums by Candlelight

Frederick, Maryland - On Saturday December 10, 2016, Museums by Candlelight will offer free holiday-themed programs at 20 museums and historic sites throughout Frederick County, Maryland. The event features the best of the winter season as it was throughout the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. Visitors can enjoy period demonstrations, living history vignettes, hands-on crafts, refreshments, tours, music, holiday decorations against a historic backdrop.

The Museums by Candlelight program offers visitors the chance to visit as many or few locations as they want on this self-guided tour. All programs begin at noon. Unless otherwise noted in the detailed listings below, the City of Frederick sites will remain open until 7 p.m., while most other sites will conclude programs at 5 p.m.

Catoctin Furnace Historical Society

12607 Catoctin Furnace Road, Thurmont

  • Step inside the ca. 1810 Collier's Log House, restored during the bicentennial era, in the largely intact colonial industrial village of Catoctin Furnace
  • Sample baked goods from traditional village recipes
  • Purchase a holiday wreath with fresh greenery, holly, pine cones, and adornments
  • Children can make their own Christmas ornament and complete a village coloring book

  • Hear the Carols by Candlelight concert at 7 pm, followed by a Christmas Tree lighting

Thurmont Historical Society

  • Step inside the Creeger House, the historic home that houses the Society’s research library, offices, archives and displays, beautifully arrayed for the holiday season
  • Visit with Santa Claus and enjoy holiday refreshments


Thurmont Regional Library

  • Explore artifacts recently discovered at the Catoctin Furnace
  • The work of local artists Russ and Cindy Pool of Thurmont will be on display
  • Discover the traditions of a Scandinavian holiday with a craft workshop at 11 am

Middletown Valley Historical Society

  • Explore a model train display around the Christmas Tree

South Mountain Heritage Society

  • Explore the unique architecture of the historic Resurrection Reformed Church, built in 1829 and the site of a field hospital after the Battle of South Mountain in 1862
  • Learn about the historic Pomplitz and Rodewald Pipe Organ and hear traditional holiday carols on one of the oldest surviving organs in Maryland
  • Enjoy period trimmings and decorations throughout the museum
  • Children are invited to make an ornament to take home


Thomas House at Monocacy National Battlefield

  • View traditional period decorations that will deck the halls of the historic Thomas House
  • Play parlor games

Urbana Regional Library

  • Explore a variety of exhibits on display, including artifacts from the Catoctin Mountain Park and Monocacy National Battlefield to celebrate the NPS Centennial

The Children’s Museum of Rose Hill Manor Park

  • Interact with World War II living historians
  • Make your own holiday ornament to take home


Historic Preservation Training Center

5 Commerce Street

  • Tour the workshop of the Historic Preservation Training Center, which provides training and historic preservation services to national park sites around the country, in the historic Jenkins Cannery building
  • Skilled craftspeople will provide demonstrations of historic building trades
  • Kids can create a winter-themed craft and earn the newest National Park Service “Junior Ranger” badge


Maryland Room, C. Burr Artz Public Library

Alternative hours: 10 am until 5 pm

  • Enjoy a running model train display in the Artz Trust Room and a free harp and flugelhorn concert outside the Maryland Room at 1 pm
  • The Hagerstown & Frederick Railway Historical Society will be in the atrium to share the history of Central Maryland's unique trolley system
  • View a display of modern artifacts celebrating the birthdays and anniversaries of products and places of American popular culture throughout the building
  • Meet a variety of local authors
  • See “Artifacts of Outlander,” a travelling exhibit from Maryland’s Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum


Museum of Frederick County History

  • Enjoy the designer holiday trees decorated by local merchants, artists and celebrities as part of the Festival of Trees
  • Enjoy free hot chocolate and cookies as well as holiday crafts for kids
  • Santa Claus will visit from 1 to 4 pm


National Museum of Civil War Medicine

  • Living historians will portray surgeons of the Union and Confederate armies
  • Docents will be on hand throughout the galleries
  • Live musicians will play period and holiday music
  • Civil War Santa Claus will visit the museum


Schifferstadt Architectural Museum

  • The 18th century German farmhouse will be adorned in simple yet natural Christmas decorations
  • Create traditional crafts made by German children in Frederick’s early history
