A Signalman's Paradise

This mountain in southern Frederick County was utilized throughout the Civil War as a signal station for the United States Army. Its peak, towering above the surrounding farmland and the nearby Potomac River, provided a view of nearby Confederate operations and encampments. In early September 1862, the signalmen atop the mountain watched in astonishment as the Confederate army crossed the Potomac and invaded Maryland for the first time.
