Soldiers marching through Downtown Frederick

Massive field armies marched through Downtown Frederick in 1862 and 1863 during the Maryland Campaign and the Gettysburg Campaign. Frederick, with a population of about 8,000 during the Civil War, was the transportation hub for the region, with road and railroad links that made it an important crossroads during the Civil War. Today, much of the 19th century architecture in the historic district remains, meaning that streetscapes visitors walk today are similar to those experienced by soldiers and residents during the Civil War.
