Caring for the Wounded
After the battles of South Mountain and Antietam in September 1862, Frederick filled with thousands of wounded and sick soldiers being treated in local schools, hotels, and churches. Today, the National Museum of Civil War Medicine tells the story of medical care during the Civil War in a building that served as an embalming station during the Civil War. Throughout Downtown Frederick, you'll find many of the 28 buildings used as United States Army hospitals after the Battle of Antietam in 1862 remain well-preserved.
On weekends during the warmer months, take a "One Vast Hospital" guided walking tour of the hospital sites hosted by the National Museum of Civil War Medicine.
