Why High Wheel Bikes?
High wheel bicycles, or penny-farthings, date back to the late 19th century. These iconic bikes, characterized by their enormous front wheel and much smaller rear wheel, were a staple of the Victorian era. They symbolized a time of innovation and adventure, and seeing them in action today is a fascinating glimpse into the past.
The National Clustered Spires High Wheel Bike Race not only celebrates this unique piece of cycling history but also brings it roaring into the present with the modern-day thrill and excitement of a professional cycling event.
The race is a celebration of both history and community here in Frederick, attracting riders and spectators from far and wide.
The festive atmosphere is palpable as the riders, many dressed in period-appropriate outfits and costumes, compete for high wheel glory. This is Frederick's "Pennyfarthing Preakness," blending the charms of a bygone era of cycling with the lively spirit of modern-day fun.
