“The Edge of Gravity” is a small trompe l’oeil mural created by William Cochran in 1991. This mural is the third installation of a three-part series titled “Angels in the Architecture.” The image depicts a dream-like youth of indeterminate age, gender, and race, attired in clothing from 1745, the year Frederick was founded. The colors in the mural—red, white, and blue—evoke a 250-year-old dream of liberty, equality, and inclusion. The figure defies gravity, floating inches off the ground.
