Joseph Dill Baker (1854–1938) was known as “Frederick’s first citizen” for his many contributions. This 70-foot granite bell tower was erected in 1941 in his memory. It now houses 49 carillon bells, ranging from 22–3,500 pounds, which are still played. A brass bas-relief dedication plaque honoring Baker is located on the base of the tower. Carillon Bells Recitals are held on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Sunday of each month from 12:30–1pm.
